Buy Less, Choose Well: A Guide to Mindful Shopping

The most sustainable purchase is often the one you don't make. The second best is something you'll use for years. Mindful shopping is simply about getting more use out of fewer things.

Think in cost per use

A €10 bag that tears after a few months and a €40 bag you use every day for five years are not the same price. Divide what you pay by the number of times you'll realistically use something, and well-made items often come out cheaper.

Check how it's made

  • Look at the stitching: is it straight, tight and reinforced where the strain is, like handles and corners?
  • Feel the material: is it sturdy enough for the way you'll use it?
  • Check the label: what is it made of, and can it be washed and repaired?

Wait before you buy

If you see something you want, give it a few days, or even 30 days for bigger purchases. If you still want it and know exactly how you'll use it, it's probably a good buy. If you've forgotten about it, you've saved the money.

Use, mend and pass on

Look after what you already have, repair it when it breaks, and when you no longer need something, give it to someone who does. Second-hand shops, swaps and selling apps keep good things in use for longer.

Buy one good bag. Use it for years.

That's the idea behind every Lupopo bag: plain, hard-wearing cotton canvas, made for everyday use rather than for a season.
