The most sustainable bag is one that lasts for years. But how can you tell, before you buy, whether a bag will go the distance? These six checks take a minute and make a big difference.
Pinch the fabric between your fingers. A good everyday bag should feel substantial, with a tight, even weave. Thin, loose fabric stretches and tears under weight.
Look along the seams. Stitches should be small, straight and even, with no loose threads or gaps. Double stitching on the main seams is a good sign.
Handles carry all the weight, so check where they join the bag. Look for extra stitching here, such as a square or cross stitched into the join, which spreads the load and stops handles pulling away.
Open and close every zip a few times. It should run smoothly without catching. Sturdy zips and well-attached cords and buttons are far less likely to fail.
Turn the bag inside out if you can. Neatly finished inside seams and a lining or inner pockets usually mean care was taken throughout.
Check the label. A bag that can be washed and mended will outlive one that can't, however good it looks on day one.
Buy one good bag. Use it for years.
And whatever you buy, the way you look after it matters too. Our bag care guide shows you how.
