When we started Lupopo, we wanted to make bags that people would use every day for years. That decided the material for us: 100% cotton canvas.

What is cotton canvas?

Canvas is a heavy, tightly woven cotton fabric. The close weave is what makes it strong and hard-wearing, which is why it has been used for centuries for sails, tents and work bags.

Why we chose it

• It's strong. Canvas copes with heavy shopping, daily commutes and being thrown in the car boot.
• It gets better with age. Cotton canvas softens and relaxes the more you use it, rather than looking worn out.
• It's easy to care for. It can be spot cleaned or gently washed, and it dries naturally.
• It can be repaired. A loose stitch or a small tear can be mended at home or by any tailor.
• It's one material. Our bags are 100% cotton, so at the very end of their life they can go to textile collection for recycling.

The honest part

Growing cotton takes land, water and energy, and a sturdy canvas bag takes more to make than a thin plastic one. That's exactly why we design our bags to last and encourage you to use them for as long as possible. The more you use a bag, the better its footprint becomes.

We'd rather sell you one bag you love for years than five you replace.
