How to Pack a Plastic-Free Picnic

Navy anchor cotton tote at a picnic in the park

Few things beat lunch outdoors on a sunny day. But a picnic bought on the way, in plastic boxes, wrappers and bottles, can leave behind a surprising amount of rubbish. A few simple swaps make it just as easy, and often nicer.

Pack food in reusable containers

Glass jars, lunch boxes and tubs with lids keep food fresh and stop it getting squashed. Wrap sandwiches in beeswax wraps or a clean cloth instead of cling film.

Bring proper plates and cutlery

  • Enamel or reusable plates and cups
  • Cutlery from home, rolled up in a cloth napkin
  • A small sharp knife and a board for cutting fruit and cheese
  • Cloth napkins or a tea towel instead of paper ones

Drinks without the bottles

Fill reusable bottles with tap water before you leave, make a jug of iced tea or lemonade at home, and pour it into a flask to keep it cold.

Choose food that travels well

Seasonal fruit, bread from the bakery, cheese, dips and salads in jars all travel well and need very little packaging. Buy from a market on the way and bring your own bag.

Leave nothing behind

Bring an extra bag for dirty plates and any rubbish, and take it all home with you. Fruit peels and scraps can go straight into your compost.

Leave the spot as beautiful as you found it.

A roomy cotton tote is perfect for carrying it all, with long handles that sit comfortably on your shoulder on the walk there.
