Most of the packaging that ends up in a household bin comes home from the weekly food shop. The good news is that it's also one of the easiest places to cut waste, and none of it needs special equipment.
Check the fridge and cupboards, plan a few meals and write a list. Buying only what you need is the simplest way to waste less food and less packaging.
Keep two or three sturdy bags by the front door or in the car, so they're there when you need them. A couple of small cotton bags are handy for loose fruit, vegetables and bread.
Farmers' markets and refill shops make low-waste shopping easy. Take clean jars or containers, weigh them first, and fill up with only the amount you need.
Keep herbs in a glass of water, bread in a cloth bag or bread bin, and leftovers in jars or tubs with lids. Food that stays fresh is food that doesn't get thrown away.
Plan one "fridge clear-out" meal a week, such as soup, a frittata or a stir-fry, to use up odds and ends before they go off.
Small habits, repeated every week, add up to a lot less waste.
Start with one or two of these steps, and add more once they feel normal.
